MINISTRY`S KEY RESULTS AREAS

  1. Gender Equality and Economic Empowerment

The purpose of the Directorate is “to promote gender equality and women empowerment”. In order to achieve its purpose, the Directorate carries out the following functions:

      (a) The facilitation and coordination of gender mainstreaming

      (b) The management of programmes on the political, social and economic empowerment of women

In view of the above functions, the Directorate is organized into three Divisions as follows:

      (i) Gender Mainstreaming Division

      (ii) Gender Based Violence Division

      (iii) Women Empowerment Division

  1. Child Protection and Development

The current purpose of the Directorate is “to coordinate and monitor Early Childhood Development and Primary Child Protection services”. To achieve its purpose, the Directorate performs the following functions:

      (a) The management of Integrated Early Childhood Development programmes and the enforcement of quality and standards in ECD and child protection interventions

      (b) The coordination and provision of leadership in Child rights advocacy and protection;

      (c) The facilitation of Parenting and Child Education support services.

In view of the above functions, the Directorate is organized into three Divisions as follows:

     (i) Primary Child Protection

     (ii) Early Childhood Development

     (iii) Resilience, Livelihoods, and Nutrition 

  1. Disability and Elderly

The purpose of the Directorate, is “to promote, support and facilitate the quality of life of persons with disabilities and the elderly”. To achieve its purpose, the Directorate currently performs the following functions:

    (a) The coordination of older persons’ programmes

    (b) The conduction and publication of research on older persons issues

    (c) The facilitation of capacity building services among stakeholders

    (d) The coordination of disability programmes

    (e) The conduction and publication of research on disability issues

    (e) The setting up of disability guidelines

In view of the above functions, the Directorate is organized into two Divisions as follows:

    (i) Disability Mainstreaming

    (ii) Ageing and Human Rights

       4. Social Protection and Development

The current purpose of the Directorate is “to facilitate, coordinate and supervise implementation of social welfare policies and programmes.” To achieve its purpose, the Directorate currently performs the following functions:

     (a) The coordination and promotion of Family welfare services

     (b) The coordination of social support services

     (c) The coordination and facilitation of probation and reformatory services

     (d) The management of reformatory centers

     (e) The management of Social Rehabilitation Centre

In view of the above functions, the Directorate is organized into Divisions as follows:

     (i) Family and Child Welfare Services Division

     (ii) Probation, Reformation and Rehabilitation Service

     (iii) Social Cash Transfer Program

     (iv) NGO Coordination

     (v) Reformatory Centers (Mpemba and Chilwa)

     (vi) Social Rehabilitation Centre

 5. Community Development

The purpose of this directorate is “Enhance effective and sustainable socio-economic development. “To achieve its purpose, the Directorate currently performs the following functions:

    (a) The coordination and regulation of community mobilization and capacity building programmes.

    (b) The coordination and regulation of home management, nutrition and economic empowerment programmes

    (c) The provision of adult literacy and education programmes

 In view of the above functions, the Directorate is divided into three divisions namely:

    (i) Adult Literacy and Education

    (ii) Community Mobilization

    (iii) Home Management and Nutrition

    (iv) Policy and Planning

This Directorate is responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of policies, plans, programmes, and projects in the Ministry. The purpose of the Directorate is “to coordinate strategic planning, policy development and review, and budgeting. It performs the following functions:

  1. The coordination of strategic planning, policy development and review, and budgeting
  2. The provision of data management and monitoring and evaluation services

The Directorate is organized into two divisions namely:

  1. Policy and Planning Division
  2. Monitoring and Evaluation Division
