COLLABORATING PARTNERS

(a) Malawi Council for the Handicapped (MACOHA). This is a Government Agency for disability. It provides institution as well as community-based vocational training to persons with disabilities across the country. MACOHA oversees the following:

  • Bangwe Weaving Factory in Blantyre
  • Lilongwe Vocational Training Centre
  • Kamuzu Vocational and Rehabilitation Training Centre in Chiradzulu
  • Community-based rehabilitation now called Community-based Inclusive programme in a number of districts in the country
  • Registration and operation of organisations operating in disability sector

(b) Federation of Disability Organization in Malawi (FEDOMA).

This is the umbrella organization for all organizations of persons with disabilities in Malawi (OPDs). There are 12 affiliate organizations to the federation as follows:

  1. Malawi National Association of the Deaf (MANAD)
  2. Malawi Union of the Blind (MUB)
  3. Parents of Disabled Children Association of Malawi (PODCAM)
  4. The Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM)
  5. The Association of Physically Disabled in Malawi (APDM)
  6. Disabled Women in Development (DIWODE)
  7. Visual Hearing Impairment Association of Malawi (VIHEMA)
  8. National Epilepsy Association (NEA)
  9. Mental Health Users and Care Association (MEHUCA)
  10. Spinal cord Injury Association of Malawi (SIAM)
  11. Disability Rights Organization Movement (DROM)
  12. Disabled Widows and Orphans Organization of Malawi (DWOOM) 

(c) Malawi Against Physical Disabilities (MAP). It is an organization or association providing the following services:

  • Assessment and provision of assistive devices e.g. wheelchairs
  • Running of Kachere Rehabilitation Centre in Blantyre
  • Training of rehabilitation technicians in Blantyre
  • Orthopaedic surgery

 (d) Malawi Network of Older Persons’ Organizations (MANEPO)

This is an umbrella organisation which is responsible for and coordinates the operations of other older person’s organisations

(e) The Department also works with Development Partners and organizations such as Special Olympics, Sue Ryder Foundation, World Vision, WaterAid, Disabled Women in Africa (DIWA), the Norwegian Association of the Disabled (NAD), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UN Women, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), CBM International, Help Age International, and Sight Savers.
