MINISTER ENGAGES FEMALE ASPIRANTS AND VISITS MULANJE SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND

As a continuation of her familiarisation tour, the Minister of Gender, Children Disability and Social Welfare Honorable Cecilia Chazama engaged female aspirants in the 2019 tripartite elections in Thyolo under the 50-50 Campaign.

During the meeting the Minister instructed 50-50 Campaign Management Agency to focus on changing the attitudes that women have towards politics, capacity building so that the female aspirants improve their public engagement skills and win the fight against violence against women in politics.

Chazama informed the aspirants that government through the Ministry has 79 lawyers that will assist women in giving direction and advice. She further warned all stakeholders supporting women that her Ministry will closely monitor them to ensure that they deliver and meet their goals.

“My Ministry will ensure that campaigning materials that are given to female aspirants like t-shirts arrives right on time” she said.

Later in the day the Minister visited Mulanje Vocational and Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind. The institution whose doors were opened in 1958 plays a crucial role in assisting blind people gain various skills to assist them in daily lives. Chazama commended members of staff for the dedication and the remarkable job they do in helping blind people in the country.

“I am aware that the institution has various challenges including limited resources, although this is the case, the fact that you are still managing to train students in various skills is very admirable. The skills and knowledge they acquire empower them to be self-reliant and also become productive citizens in their localities and the nation at large,” said Chazama.

The minister implored the nation at large to send blind people to this institution so that they acquire skills that will benefit them and encouraged Malawians of good will to support the institution.
