HOME MANAGEMENT AND NUTRITION

The Division coordinates national efforts to improve Community nutrition and Health as well as the social protection situation of the country in line with the Multi-sector Nutrition Policy and National Social Support Policy (NSSP). The HM&N Division is responsible for the promotion of the Savings and Loans Groups (SLGs)/ Village Savings and Loans Programmes (VSLs) implemented under the provisions of the MNNSP II and Community nutrition interventions implemented in line with the provisions of the Multi-sector Nutrition Policy.

The Division has 3 main programmes:                    

1. Home Management Programme

The programme deals with issues of home improvement, household budgeting and hygiene and sanitation and is operationally linked to the National Sanitation Policy. Examples of specific activities under this component include provision of household hygiene and sanitation education and promotion of hygiene and sanitation practices.

2. Nutrition and Health Programme

The programme deals with community nutrition and HIV and AIDS issues and is operationally linked to the Multi-sector Nutrition policy. Examples of specific activities under this component include provision of nutrition education, conducting campaigns to improve nutritional status of households, establishment of Integrated Homestead Farming (IHF) and promotion of nutrition displays to disseminate acceptable nutrition habits.

3. Community Economic Empowerment for Resilient Livelihoods Programme

The programme deals with issues aimed at improving incomes of communities and are operationally linked to the National Social Support Policy, thus, through it, the Ministry implements the Malawi National Social Support Programme.

Examples of specific activities under this component include mobilizing communities into Savings and Loan Groups (SLGs) including Community Savings  and investment Promotion (COMSIP); training SLGs in management; promotion of small and medium scale businesses through provision of entrepreneurship, technical and vocational skills training and facilitating access to credit facilities, business promotion services and marketing services for their products at both local and international markets; and facilitating transformation of business groups into cooperatives.
