Malawi to Celebrate 2025 International Women’s Day

Malawi is set to celebrate International Women’s Day with a lineup of events aimed at honoring women’s achievements and pushing
for gender equality, Deputy Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, honourable Halima Daud, MP, has announced.
 
Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe on Tuesday, the Deputy Minister emphasized the importance of giving women and girls
equal opportunities, leadership roles, and economic empowerment in line with this year’s theme: All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment.
 
She said to mark the occasion, the Ministry and its partners have organized several activities which include a visit to Kamuzu Central Hospital Maternity Wing On March 5.
She further said On March 7, there will be a a business expo, a breakfast meeting, and a Small and Medium Enterprise
Clinic at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre to promote women led businesses and networking opportunities.
 
According to the Deputy Minister, these events aim to highlight women’s contributions while addressing the challenges they face.
She observed that Malawi has made strides in gender equality through laws like the Gender Equality Act (2013) and the Prevention
of Domestic Violence Act (2006) but noted ongoing challenges like gender-based violence, low female representation in politics and economic disparities.
 
UN Women Country Representative, Letty Chiwara commended Government through the Ministry for promoting gender equality.
